The USB model incorporates a "virtual COM port" allowing it to function with all existing applications that were created for RS232 COM port as well as any new USB applications. The W800 family devices receive X10 RF signals and then sends them directly to a Computer. Thus bypassing the usual power line delay and minimizing power line clutter.
It does require a dedicated computer and one of the supported software packages.
